Variety Philadelphia: Let Them Eat Cake
On Sunday, March 5, 2017, bakers of all types, professionals, students, and enthusiasts, met at the Lowes Hotel to strut their stuff in the 2017 Variety Philadelphia’s annual fundraiser, Let Them Eat Cake: A Variety of Childhood Fun & Fantasy. All proceeds from the competition benefited Variety – the Children’s Charity to improve the quality of life for children with special needs.
Ewing High School’s Culinary Arts Teacher and Rowan College Chef Instructor, John Kocubinski was fortunate to participate in the event as a baking coach for Rowan College at Burlington County. In this role John Kocubinski and Rowan College students Mark Keating and Olivia Mc Caw were given the opportunity to compete against more than 35 of the area’s best pastry chefs and culinary schools. John helped guide the talented students to dig deep into their creative bag of tricks and create their own edible, stunning works of art. The result was a spectacular Candy Land themed 4 tiered cake. Also included in their submission was a show stopping vanilla cake that included a tiramisu syrup soak, cream cheese mousse, topped with a Swiss butter crème frosting. Their late night baking and decorating efforts lead the team to WIN the competition: BEST STUDENT ENTRY.
